I’m Bob Colegrove and I’m a child psychologist in Sherman Oaks, CA. I enjoy my work with children and adolescents; working with children is never boring and always full of surprises. I find my work to be very rewarding; with the right intervention, children and teenagers are able to make significant improvements in their emotional and behavioral success and can learn skills that will help them be successful even as adults. I get to work with loving parents and caregivers that are willing to do whatever is needed to help their children; I enjoy working collaboratively with parents, teachers and others to help children succeed. My practice is divided into two types of intervention; individual/family psychotherapy and psychoeducational/neuropsychological assessment. I enjoy the process of working through emotional and behavioral issues with children and teenagers; it’s a process and a central goal is to teach coping skills that can be effective over time. For the assessments, it’s an investigative process to really get underneath academic, learning, behavioral, attentional and emotional issues to identify underlying issues to provide clear direction for intervention.

My career has evolved over time. I initially obtained a master’s degree in counseling and guidance and immediately became licensed as a Marriage, Family and Child therapist (LMFT). After four years of working in a day treatment program for children with emotional and behavioral problems, I felt the need to gain more education and began a doctor degree program in Educational Psychology with a specialization in school psychology. I was frustrated in my work as an MFT by our psychologist’s inability to utilize assessment data to help me understand the needs of my clients. Was interested in learning how to assess children and provide practical and useable information for parents, teachers, therapists and anyone working with children.

After completing my coursework, I completed a one-year doctoral internship in child and pediatric psychologist at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine based in the Behavioral Psychologist division of the Kennedy-Krieger Center. I had an incredible training experience in which I worked with children with all sorts of behavioral and emotional issues; was also able to complete a specialty rotation in neuropsychological assessment. After completing my internship, I accepted a one year Fellowship in child psychology at the USC School of Medicine (now called the Keck School of Medicine) at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. I initially worked in the Hematology-Oncology, working with children with illnesses such as cancer, hemophilia and HIV. I conducted research on strategies to help children cope with illness and reintegrate into school after treatments. I also completed neuropsychological assessments to assess the effects of cancer treatment on children over time.

While completing my fellowship at Children’s Hospital, I began to work part time in the child psychology practice in Sherman Oaks. Overtime, my roles at Children’s Hospital changed; I was the head psychologist for the UCED program and I provided supervision for the psychology interns and fellows. I gradually increased my time in my practice and left Children’s Hospital completely in 2014. I enjoy being able to work directly with children and teenagers. I feel as a psychologist you must constantly be open to new information and research to provide the best and most appropriate interventions. I enjoy the process of learning and feel that I’m constantly improving my skills as a psychologist.

Sincerely,

Robert Colegrove, Ed.D.
